Earlier in the week during a press conference, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) gave details on their efforts to save high-tourism-value wildlife during the height of the drought last year, which devastated parts of eastern Africa through crop failures, livestock dying of thirst, and wildlife numbers dwindling.
According the KWS, they engaged in a feeding and watering program in the Amboseli and Tsavo national parks, which in spite of this proactive intervention, lost up to 40 percent of the game numbers due to lack of water and food. KWS, in close cooperation with safari lodge operators in the affected areas, spent millions of Kenya shillings to purchase and transport hey to feeding grounds, while also organizing additional boreholes providing water to the animals and helping significant numbers to survive.
