A 48-year-old Malaysian airline flight attendant has been charged with smuggling high-grade heroin and ice into Sydney and Melbourne.

The man was the second flight attendant arrested at Sydney Airport at the weekend over an international drug trafficking operation and charged with importing a border-controlled drug.

He subsequently faced court and has been held in custody to reappear in May.

“Police have alleged that the man brought drugs into the country by using his position as a crew member on an international airline,” Victoria Police said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

He is the ninth person arrested in the sting, initially made public on January 16.

A female Malindo Air cabin crew employee and another staffer from the airline were among eight people arrested in Melbourne in the first fortnight of January.

At the time police alleged a Melbourne-based Vietnamese organized crime syndicate imported more than $20 million of high grade heroin and methamphetamine from Malaysia.

The two airline employees allegedly hid the drugs on their bodies, with one accused telling authorities it was the 20th time they had done it.

Officers seized six kilograms of heroin with a street value of $14.5 million, eight kilograms of methamphetamine worth $6.4 million and half a kilo of cocaine during raids on seven Melbourne properties.

Subsequent raids of properties resulted in the seizure of cars and cash.

All nine people charged in connection with the trafficking operation are due to have their matters mentioned in Melbourne Magistrates Court on May 15.
