(eTN) – Italy was unanimously elected to the presidency of World Tourism Organization (WTO) during the 89th council meeting on the island of Kish (Iran) and will exercise its mandate, renewable, for the entire 2011. The ceremony of installation in office of Ms. Brambilla, as chairman of the executive council will be held in Madrid on November 12, 2010.

Given the crucial role played in the last year, Italy has been elected to chair the executive council of the World Tourism Organization, the operating arm of the United Nations, whose membership comprises 154 countries and over 400 organizations and that promotes tourism worldwide also as a means of exchange and understanding between peoples by dictating the guidelines for its strategic development in the economic outlook.

“I am extremely pleased,” said minister of tourism, Michela Vittoria Brambilla (pictured), “a result that rewards the activities of our government, and in particular the decision to appoint a minister of tourism and return to this industry the attention and the place it deserves, finally ensuring the launch of a national policy of tourism.

“In the changing international context of globalized tourism and a Europe that still attracts more than 50% of tourists of the world, but it needs to redraw its strategy to continue to compete successfully, Italy must not only play the role of concern on the international scenary because of its given role of world tourism power, but must also compare knowledge and best practices with countries that now lead on a global level the trend of the market. The results of the first part of this year in terms of international tourist flow tell us that the trend is right: Italy was up 5.3%, well above the European average.

“In this dimension of international comparison, the election of Italy to chair the executive council of the World Tourism Organization is the highest award possible for our country.”
